Quidditch Rules
(some rules taken directly from HOL Quidditch FAQ; used with permission.)

I. A Brief History

WQL Quidditch is based on the system developed by HOL. It is a text based, Harry Potter trivia game played on IRC (Internet relay chat.). For information on IRC, please see the HOL IRC FAQ.

II. Summary of Time Line

We plan to start the WQL season the first week of December, with the month of November being used for qualifications and team training/practices. We will play games on the weekends, with the season ending sometime in June (I believe.)

III. The How of Game Play

Quidditch is based on Trivia knowledge. The questions asked are all related Harry Potter, whether it be about the books (the two schoolbooks have not yet been decided upon), or any publically known/available information on J.K. Rowling. To play quidditch, your name must be in the following form - TeamInitials-positionandnumber-name. So if my name was LadyBlue of Blue's Bashers, and I played chaser, my nickname would be: BB-C1-LadyBlue.

Since WQL quidditch is trivia based, your answers should be spelled correctly to count. We do allow for answers to be "one letter off" (also called the "one letter rule"). Numbers do not need to be spelled out, unless otherwise specified by the question.

THE QUAFFLE

Question #1: 3 Chasers vs. 3 Chasers
Question #2: 3 Chasers (of the team who answered correctly) vs. 2 opposing team's Beaters

  • Beater wins --> Beater's team's Chasers vs. opposing Beaters (#2)
  • Chaser wins --> then...
If no one knows the answer to any question, back to Question #1.
Question #3: 1 Chaser vs. 1 Keeper
  • Keeper wins --> Keeper's team's Chasers vs. opposing Beaters (#2)
  • Chaser wins --> 10 points to the Chaser who scored's team. (Keeper's team's Chasers vs. Beaters - #2)
If no one knows the answer to any question, back to Question #1.

THE BLUDGER

It is the referee's decision when to yell "BLUDGER". In this case, all players (except the seekers) are to type "dodge" as soon as possible. The catch is - only the first three dodges from each team are counted. The captain of the team that gets their three dodges first may pick an opponent to sit out until the next goal is scored. Opponents who typed "dodge" before the winning three dodges were registered may not be bludgered.

The only time the "bludger" may take out a keeper is in the situation of "Chaser vs. Keeper". Otherwise, the Keeper may not be hit by the bludger. (No aiming of bludgers at the Keeper when the quaffle is not in the scoring area - PoA Chapter 15, pg 309-310 hardcover.)

DODGE must be spelled correctly in order to have successfully dodged the bludger! (The "one letter" rule does not apply.)

THE SNITCH

The snitch is the seeker's job and more information will be following soon. (WQL snitch is NOT the same as the currect HOL snitch, though HOL will soon be adopting the new WQL snitch. :) )
